By Bill Gunston
Stingers is the affectionate name given to VFA-113. It was also the first strike fighter squadron to operate the F/A-18 Hornet, a singular choice.
The hornetis the first US Navy and Marine Corps'newest Fighter/Attack aircraft and is the first ever to carry an official designation that links two missions. Portrayed here through the photographic lenses of McDonnell Douglas, the aircrasft's manufacturers and the USAF's (sic) official photographers, the plane's speed, agility and grace is enhanced by first-hand accounts from pilots, ground crew, flight deck personnel as well as ordnance and maintenance crews. This unique approach gives the reader a stunning new perspective on this amazing airplane.
Bill Gunston traces the development of the aircraft from inception as the YF-17, through the legal battles to the plane's present day (1990) establishment as a unique aircraft charged with three seperater missions.
This hardcover book was published in 1990 and thus has some stuning photos of the F/A-18A and dual-seat F/A-18B.
