About this Squadron

SAAF No 26 Squadron was formed on 24 August 1942 at Voortrekkerhoogte as a bomber-reconnaissance unit and embarked for West Africa on 9th April 1943, arriving at Takoradi on 4th May 1943. Equipped with Mk XI Wellingtons it flew its first patrol on 29th May and for the rest of the war was engaged in anti-submarine patrols off the west African coast. A number of airfields between Dakar and Lagos were used by the squadron but its maintenance base remained at Takoradi throughout its service in the area.

On 26 May 1945 26 Squadron ceased operations and its personnel embarked for South Africa on May 30, its Wellingtons being flown to the Middle East for disposal.

A website dedicated to the crews of 26 Squadron during WWII may be found at http://www.26squadron.co.za.
