The SAAF most northern air base, situated near the border with Zimbabwe, it is also it's most modern. It is situated 20km from the foot of the Soutpansberg Mountains in the Limpopo province.
The base, known as the "Fortress of the North" was officially opened on 14 October 1987 as AFB Louis Trichardt, but changed it's name to match that of the changed name of the nearby town on 7 November 2003.
