Yesterday I came across these enclosed images of a  24 Sqn. Marauder II (FB 591) "Z"
It is an ex Frog kit re boxed by ATM in the States during the sixties. I presume the markings were based on the enclosed colour artwork of Richard Ward that appeared in FLYING REVIEW at that time.
What caught my eye is the nose art of a beautiful lady on the decal sheet ........ so started looking  for a photo of the plane. My search ended negative but I cannot believe that such well known artist as Mr. Ward would produce colour drawing without photographic evidence.
Steven McLean did mention FB591 in his "Squadrons" book  so it was real...........
Anybody know of a photo?

Cheers,Etienne.

A 24 Squadron Machine could also be built from the Matchbox kit which included "Z" and the nose art.
I used these decals with the old Airfix Marauder which at least didnt have the trenches like Matchbox.

The old Frog kit of the Marauder had the decals for a 24 Sqn aircraft, that of Lt PMJ McGregor who later on was the founder of the SAAF Museum.

There is a portion of the original nose art at the museum.

I haven't seen it recently though.

I used to borrow a copy of "Per Noctem per Diem" the 24 squadron history from the local library in PE. I can remember being fascinated by this nose art and I thought I had the decals with the two SAAF aircraft on, but can't find them. I had the Airfix kit.

There is a slightly grainy picture of Z with the "blonde in swimsuit" adjacent to p253 in Per n per d. There is what looks like a name in tiny white letters near the glass cowling to the left of the Z but i can't read it . Photographic material credits in the Editor's Note are to Mr GR Duxbury of the SA National War Museum. Was there an SAAF museum yet? Be interested to see the portion of the real thing!

Will need help to get a picture from the book up.

Greg
