Hi Mamba. I recall that the Canadian version doesn't have the full suite of 3 MFDs. But I could be wrong. I've seen a pic of the SAAF Hawk instrument panels care of Dean and they look like the photoetch set I used. The kit's rear panel has a large shroud on the top MFD which needs to be cut back. Other than that, I think the Kinetic kit parts with the photoetch goodies are OK.

I agree, they do look like the photos of mk 120 hawk cockpits so I would think that they are quite accurate to dispict a SAAF hawk.

Cheers

Hi Mistral - thread has gone quiet? Or have you picked it up in another thread?

Hi MH. Ja, it's languishing unbuilt in the back of a cupboard. I tried all manners to paint that damn canopy detonation cord and just stuffed it up. So until I come up with a bright idea on how to sort that out, I'm afraid it'll stay that way :?

I would simplt scribe the inside of the canopy and do a grey pinwash to hilight it better. Short of that I dont know who one might get the efftect.
If one had a decal to do that, it could work if the carrierfilm is removed after setting...

Check out this guy: https://www.britmodeller.com/forums/ind ... 2/&page=99

He has not finished the build yet but he attempted to do the det-cord with photo etch in 1/72. That should be a good proposition and easier to achieve in 1/32 rather than 1/72?

Cheers!

Thanks for the suggestions. The debt cords are moulded as raised lines on the inside of the canopy. I tried masking with Tamiya tape but it's a very complex pattern and came out a right mess. The best would be too have laser cut vinyl pieces. The raised detail could be sanded off and polished. I was hoping someone would've done this by now.

So then, after a few years gathering dust and cobwebs, it's time to finish this one. I managed to sort out the detonation cord with very careful masking using Tamiya tape. 2 hours of work

However, now for the paint. On one of the other forum topics on SAAF colours on this site, the general consensus for SAAF Hawk colours is Humbrol 127 (light grey) and 126 (dark grey). Having looked at my images of the Hawk, neither of these are close to reality. They are a) too light and b) do not have a bluish hue to them. I've checked the other Humbrol greys such as 123, 125 and 128. None are close. I've now resorted to the web to match colours with the images I have. Let's see what comes out of this.

She's alive!

Going by how well you managed to match the Cheetah's colour from photo references, she will come out looking just fine!

Colours are the fantastic Mr. Colour enamel paints. I think they're a goodmatch. Light grey = Mr. Colour #308 (FS36375) and dark grey = Mr. Colour #337 (FS35237). Both thinned with Mr. Colour levelling thinners. Finally we seem to have a good range of properly mixed colours at the local hobby shops. Beats having to try to figure out the correct mix using Tamiya paints (as much as I love Tamiya paint quality).

I kept her pretty clean as Gannet always seems to be well turned out as the SAAF's display aerie. Some very light weathering using MiG washes over a gloss acrylic base. Characteristic lines behind the wing vortex generators were applied with a light application of dark grey pastels. Final varnish using Tamiya's TS-80 matt decanted from a rattle can and airbrushed on which results in a satin finish.

Stylised gannet graphic on the vertical stabiliser and "Gannet" text airbrushed on using a really beautiful set of masks done for me by Herman (fellow modeller and computer whiz). Thanks Herman - these made all the difference. Decals were a combo of the kit supplied stencilling and the Mavdecals set.

Only extra I added were the little diagonal reinforcing rods on the inside of the rear canopy section.
