Hi,

I have just joined this forum as i need some information for this build. I have seen following pages:

https://saafww2pilots3.yolasite.com/16- ... t-1944.php

https://biltongbru.wixsite.com/ww2-saaf ... hotographs

and this picture from wikipedia:

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File ... _C5894.jpg

First of all i wonder which gun camera was installed in the nose- i have seen 3 different kinds, on this picture it is not so clear - maybe there is a picture which shows the nose of one of the 4 planes (H, S, K., L)?

What was the registration number of the 4 planes?

The colour - I am using decals from Xtradecals - Mediterranean twins whcih shows a plane from the 19 sqn - it is proposed extra dark sea grey, dark slate grey and sky for the lower hull. but on this picture it looks much darker, could it be that the plane had only 2 grey colours? It has also an amblem under the gun camera -was it only on the 19 sqn palnes or on the 16. as well.

Thanks a lot in advance for your help
kind regards
Branko

Steve McLean's book Squadrons of the South African Air and their aircraft 1920-2005 lists some numbers and codes for the Beaufighter's of 16 Sqn and 19 Sqn.

16 Sqn Beaufighter
NE409 "K"
NV151"H"
RD200"W"
LZ333
LZ337
LZ365
LZ366"K"
LZ368

19 Sqn Beaufighter VI and X
EL398
JL706
JM319
LX927
LZ366"K" a/c also from 16 Sqn
NW350"Y"
NV480"A"

What photo are you referring to regarding the colours and emblem?

The colours that the SAAF used would be the standard RAF pattern and colours.

Hope this helps a bit

Geoff

Hi Geoff,

thanks a lot. I referr on this photo from wikipedia, when I enlarge it could really be LZ366 for the "K":

not colorised:

And I know that the colours are the RAF but on this photo the underside is quite dark, it should actualy be "sky" (upper surface extra dark sea grey and dark slate grey). And when i compare the gun camera in the nose it looks different than this one (252 Sqn RAF):

and this one (here is also the amblem which is on the Xtradecals sheet for the 19 Sqn):

So this 2 things I am still not sure.

Anyway, also with the list you helped me. Thanks once again

kind regards
Branko

Did you colourise the photo?

I've been experimenting with a few online auto colourising sites this past week, but have not been happy with any of them.

Interesting to see the fin flash is reversed on the coloured photo!

Also that the centre of the roundel and fin flash is red and not orange.

Interesting to see that the fin flash is correct on the site that Airbus89 posted yet it's swopped around on the first photo!
