Hi

I see the A-Darter programme is reactivated by Denel.
The A-Darter is old and obsolete by know.
Is it still worth it for the SAAF to buy the missile?

Thanks

A-Darter is still one of the best air-to-air missiles in the world. The SAAF should absolutely invest in its procurement.

That missile is more than 13 years old.
The tech that was used is outdated how can it still be best in the world?

To quote mamba here "is still one of the best air-to-air missiles in the world" mamba never said that it was the best.

Because unlike mobile phones weapon systems are not outdated after two years. Huge money is spent to design something that will remain relevant for decades. A missile doesn't become obsolete after two years. Especially not ones developed in the 21st century which are all highly manuverable, can interface with helmet sights and have high off bore capabilities.

Look at A-Darter's peers. AIM-9X (2004); IRIS-T(2005) and ASRAAM (1998). All of those are highly regarded weapons. Yes there have been some upgrades to some of the design elements no doubt over the years but that does not make the weapon less lethal. I am not saying A-Darter is the best out of all the current SRAAM's available, but to not procure it because the design is "13 years old" would quite simply be foolish.

Right now, the SAAF Gripen fleet would do well to even have V3S and V4 available as both those retired systems can still be useful tools in a knights arsenal.

Yes I agree the V4 would of been a welcome tool in the Gripen arsenal since we dont have a BVR capacity anymore.
Will it not be cheaper to just by more IRIS-T missiles instead of changing to A-Darter?

Why must we buy from a foreign source that can impose sanction against us?

Don't forget the Rand/ Dollar rate of exchange in sourcing products from external suppliers.

We have the capability to design and manufacture our own which is beneficial to SA.
