The Westland Wasp was developed specifically for naval ship based operations and entered service with the Briyish Royal Navy in 1964. The Wasp could be used for anti-submarine warfare carrying either a torpedo or depth-charges.
The Wasp was South Africa's first naval helicopter and entered service in 1963 and was retired by 1990 after 27 years of service.
