The Mustang IV and IVA served with 5 Squadron during world War II, flying escourt and ground attack missions in Italy and Yugoslavia.
The squadron converted to the Mustang Mk III in Italy during September 1944, having previously flown Kittyhawks. The unit later received the Mustang Mk IV, with which it flew until the end of hostilities.
The surviving Mustangs were handed back at the end of the war.
