When the SAAF volunteered to help the United Nations in Korea, 2 Squadron was equipped with USAF-owned F-51D Mustangs. Although flying in SAAF colours, these aircraft were never placed on the SAAF inventory and were handed back to the USAF when 2 Sqn in Korea were re-equipped with USAF F-86 Sabres.
