Electronic Warfare Centre

About this Squadron

The SAAF Electronic Warfare Centre consists of seven sections:

  • Operations:
    - Employment of the Mobile Ground SIGINT System
    - Employment of Radar Reflective Balloons
    - Supplyinh EW Operators for Airborne Electronic Support Measures platforms, Airborne Jammers and Foreign Weapon Systyems
  • Training:
    - Providing various EW courses to aircrew
    - Training for the Electronic Operator Course, EW Mission Planning Course and EW Systems Cource
    - Continuation training of Electronic Operators
  • Analysis
    Responsible for processing of sensor data originating from:
    - Mobile Ground Signal Intelligence Systems
    - C-47TP EW platform
    - Boeing 707
    - Cheetah C
    Updating the current intelligence system
  • Technical Evaluation
    Responsible for:
    - Threat definition
    - Countermeasures development
    - Countermeasures test and evaluation
    - Foreign weapon systems exploitation
  • Logistic Support
    Responsible for:
    - Management of the EW Centre operational budget
    - EW Centre transport maintenance, operation and management
    - Logistical support to camps, exercises, evaluations and trials
    - Logistical support for EW operations
  • Engineering Services
    Responsible for:
    - Maintaining all operational pre-flight data files for various aircraft
    - Maintaining and executing testing on the Multiple Emitter Environment Simulator
    - Optimising infrared countermeasure effectiveness by means of simulation and modelling
    - Maintaining the parameter database for SAAF electronic warfare and other SANDF players
    - Engineering support to projects
    - Develop, evaluate and implement radar electronic countermeasures for in-service systems
  • Maintenance
    Responsible for:
    - Organisational, intermediate and Depot-level maintenance of various EW systems fitted to aircraft
    - Organisational-level maintenance of ground-based EW systems, such as Mobile Ground Signal Intelligence Systems, Communication Callibration Systems and the Communication Training System
    - Intermediate and Depot-level maintenance of the radar systems fitted to various aircraft
