Ysterplaat 2003 Airshow (Video / DVD)

Reviewed By: Dean Wingrin

The Ysterplaat Airshow, celebrating one hundred years of flight, took place on Saturday 8 November 2003 at AFB Ysterplaat, Cape Town.

Ysterplaat airshows are renowned for featuring air displays by classic aircraft, particularly British, that no longer fly anywhere else. This, together with more modern aircraft and the magnificent Table Mountain as a backdrop to the static displays, makes for an airshow that appeals to the international aircraft fundi and general public alike.

Where else can you see the last flying examples, in many cases in formations of two or more, of aircraft such as the Shackleton, Lightning, Buccaneer (x 3!), Hunter, DC-3 Dakota, the P-166S Albatross, Harvards (x 6) and UH-1H Huey? Other aircraft include the Seabee, C-47TP, Alouette II and III, Bo-105, PC-6, Oryx, Rooivalk, Impala, Cheetah, C-130, CASA 212, Cessna Caravan and a flypast by a SAA Boeing 747-400.

The video is not only about the flying displays. An attempt is made to include the viewer in the whole airshow experience. The footage, by two cameras, includes the sequences flown on the Friday practise/accreditation day and then of the actual airshow day, with dawn breaking over a sleepy airbase which gradually comes to life. The static and hanger displays are not forgotten, with footage of the various activities around the airfield.

There is no formal commentary, apart from that picked up from the PA during the actual displays, but I believe the producers tried to exclude as much commentary as possible, preferring to include the sound of the aircraft. However, there are very few screen titles to indicate the type on display and light music does accompany all the sequences.

Having watched the video, you are left with the feeling that you were actually at the airshow. As a bonus, the producers have included a ten-minute advert which was produced to publicise the 2004 airshow. This segment features additional footage taken at a number of other South African airshows and is a welcome addition.
