Stellenbosch 2001 Air Show (Video)

Reviewed By: Dean Wingrin

The Stellenbosch Flying Club has a long history of holding airshows and the Wesbank Stellenbosch 2001 Airshow, held on 15-16 December 2001, has got to be rated as the best yet. Blessed with stunning scenery, this picturesque airfield in the Western Cape is the perfect place to hold an airshow.

The airshow organisers put together a magnificent collection of historic warbirds, such as the Shackleton, Hunter, Lightning, L-29 Delfin, L-39 Albatross, Spitfire Mk9, Harvard, Sea Fury, Buccaneer, Strikemaster and Yak-8, to name a few! Add some current and past civil aircraft with a few SAAF aircraft and you have the makings of a superb airshow.

Well, we know the airshow was a great success, but what about the video?

Although only 30 minutes long, the video is well edited and encapsulates all the excitement of the main flying sequences. Of interest was the extra footage of the start-up of the Shackleton from Cape Town IAP and flying display from inside the Shackleton. There is even a short clip of the Shackleton when still in service. Narration is by James Lennox, supplemented by knowledgeable airshow commentator Mark Storey, who even knows to keep quiet when the Spitfire is flying. Brief footage is also shown of some of the static aircraft and stalls.

This video is a great reminder for those that attended and if you like warbirds, then you should seriously consider this video.
