Learner navigators will be stationed in Cape Town for their flying training, but will from time to time receive training at various squadrons in the Air Force, if required and subject to aircraft availability.

The subjects offered and type of aircraft used for the duration of these phases are as follows:

Subjects:
  • Navigation
  • Maps and Plotting
  • Flight Planning
  • Avionics
  • Crew Cooperation
  • Electronic Warfare
Aircraft types used include:
  • Side-by-side trainer
  • Pilatus PC-7 Mk II
  • Cessna Caravan
  • C47 TP Dakota
Approximately 2 years and 7 months after completing Basic Military Training and after approximately 90 flying hours and 60 simulator hours, learner navigators will qualify and receive their wings at the same time as the pupil pilots at the Central Flying School (with due pomp and ceremony).

They will then be transferred to various squadrons for utilisation.
