New birdstrike project
Date: 23 July 2009
The SAAF has embarked on an ambitious new project to combat the threat of birdstrikes to its aircraft.
Airforce base Swartkop has been identified to pilot this project, which involves the use of specially trained dogs to chase birds away from the runway.
In a media release, the Department of Defence said that the SAAF plans to introduce Border Collies to reduce bird movements on runways at all its flying bases and units. This process involves the selection of a young dog with the right temperament that is trained to chase birda away from flying areas.
