Stellenbosch airshow
Date: 21 March 2003
The airshows organised by the Stellenbosch Flying Club have a long tradition of quality and interesting aircraft. The fact that the airfield has got to be one of the most picturesque on the SA airshow circuit doesn't hurt either! Although billed as one of the 'big five' airshows in South Africa during 2003, the weather was not in on the game. The practice day on Friday 21 March was a beautiful day, blue skies and hot. Saturday morning turned out to be grey and overcast with showers. This was to be the main show day, but due to weather conditions it was decided to cancel the days activities at 8.30am. This was a great disappointment, but visitors were still encouraged to attend and visit the various hanger displays and view the (short) aircraft flightline for free.
Sunday, 23 March dawned just as grey, but in true tradition the show went on, which was greatly appreciated by the many enthusiasts. This included flypasts by the Shackleton and a Boeing. Unfortunately, I was not able to attend on the Sunday, but Neels Basson has kindly provided a few of his photos. However, the excellent commentary by Mark Storey in previous years was, to the great disappointment of many, supplanted by Brian Emmanis.
Below are photos taken on the practice day on Friday and a few ground shots on a very wet Saturday morning. Enjoy.
