Air force to scale down
Date: 30 May 2006
Pretoria - The SA Air Force plans to scale down operations at certain of its bases, including the two fighter bases at Hoedspruit and Makhado in Limpopo.
The chief of the air force, Lieutenant General Carlo Gagiano said on Tuesday this was part of plans to make the air force more cost effective.
"We going to look at those people at required at the bases and the rest will move back to Pretoria," Gagiano said.
He said the air force was busy aligning its operations to support the country's foreign policy, including peace operations in other African countries.
"My vision is to have a practical air force that is willing and able to deploy anywhere on the continent."
He said the trick was to find a balance between what could be afforded and what the country needs.
