All operational units, squadrons and aircraft have now left AFB Swartkop and notice has been given by the SAAF for the disposal of the airfield. The only unit remaining is the SAAF Museum and they will remain there as the SAAF is not giving up that portion of the airfield, nor the ajoining AFS Snake Valley. There is a good possibility that the airfield will become an Aviation Heritage Site and SAA has already moved its Historic Flight into the old 42 Squadron hanger.

First preference, however, goes to other state departments for the use of the land and the Police Air Wing is considering the consolidation of its operating locations at the airfield. If the airfield is declared an Aviation Heritage Site, then no further development can take place and the future of the airfield as a historic aviation airfield is assured.
