Plane crashes outside Nelspruit
Date: 7 February 2005
Five people have been injured, one critically, after a plane crash outside Nelspruit last night. It's understood the light military aircraft took off from Nelspruit airport just before 6 o'clock, but couldn't gain altitude. It then crashed into the veld and burst into flames.
Netcare 911 paramedic Nico Louw was on the scene. He says the patients managed to escape because they weren't entrapped. Louw explained that because the plane had just departed there was surplus petrol on board, which caught fire. He said most of the injuries were burns. One critically injured passenger has been severely burnt, while a second has a fractured knee. The other passengers were only slightly injured in the crash.
