Saab Aerospace of Sweden and BAE Systems' Avionics' group, in partnership with South Africa's Cumulus, have signed an agreement that will see the latter's Striker integrated helmet-mounted display (IHMD) developed further for use on the JAS 39 Gripens on order for the South African Air Force (SAAF).

The IHMD, to be marketed as the Cobra helmet, is the hitherto 'missing' element of the Gripen's integrated avionics system for the SAAF. Saab sources suggest that Sweden's Flygvapnet (air force) is looking favourably on the Cobra to meet its own IHMD requirement.

Sweden's Gripen has been fitted for, but not yet with, such a helmet display, which is important to get the best out of its forthcoming IRIS-T air-to-air missile.
