The South African Air Force (SAAF) Museum air show at Swartkop will now be held on 7 September, and not 31 August as previously reported.

This is according to the Officer Commanding Air Force Base (AFB) Swartkop, who confirmed with Aviation Central the new date.

The museum air show was originally set down for 4 May but was put on hold because of national and provincial elections four days later. Airshow South Africa subsequently indicated the Swartkop event would take place on 8 June but this was changed, indicating the Museum air show would happen in August. The August 31 date was initially confirmed by SAAF Corporate Staff Services, but not by the Museum Officer Commanding, who gave the new date earlier this week.

The Swartkop event is an important one for the SAAF Museum as it is the annual major fundraising initiative for the museum, headquartered at the Centurion air force base with satellite units at AFB Port Elizabeth and AFB Ysterplaat.

Last year’s show was themed “Our Indomitable Spirit,” recognising the collective and individual sacrifices of SAAF members in pursuit of the air force mandate.

The SAAF Museum Air Show attracts thousands every year to celebrate military aviation on the ground and in the air. In addition to the Museum’s collection of airworthy aircraft the hangars at the base – the oldest SAAF base in the country and part of the Imperial Gift that saw the establishment of the SAAF – house many aircraft and components giving an overall history of the force which will next year mark its centenary.

Air shows in South Africa this year have included the Middelburg Air Show on 9 March, the Stellenbosch Air show on 23 March, the Lowveld Air Show in Nelspruit on 11 May, the Newcastle Air Show on 1 June and the Krugersdorp Air Show on 22 June. The next air show will be held in Bethlehem on 24 August (the Mafikeng air show scheduled for 22 June was cancelled). Botswana and Mozambique have also held air shows this year.
