SAAF helicopter damaged during capability demonstration

By Dean Wingrin

A South African Air Force (SAAF) Oryx medium-transport helicopter was damaged when it landed hard during an Air Capability Demonstration yesterday.

The Oryx, operating as the lead helicopter of a flight of two, was coming in to land during twilight in order to disembark troops. The helicopter landed hard, but remained upright and the troops exited the aircraft as planned.

However, once the dust and smoke from the mock-battle had cleared, it was evident that the tail boom had broken at the tail boom attachment point to the fuselage.

The Oryx was serial 1228 of 19 Squadron.

It was reported that Col. Eugene Motati, spokesperson for the SAAF, said there were no serious injuries.
