A military helicopter made an emergency landing near the Margate whale deck earlier today, South Coast Herald reports.

This is according to a source who told the South Coast Herald that the chopper was en route to Port St Johns when it was forced to land due to a mechanical failure. It is believed the engine may have over-heated.

Gerrit Hendrik Jooste Potgieter wrote on Facebook:

“I wondered why he came over my house very low in Uvongo and made a u-turn back in the direction of Margate.”

Update: The Oryx was checked on site and flown back to base a few hours later at lunchtime.
