SAAF to get full complement of new aircraft
Date: 29 September 2001
The government remains on course to buy all the jet fighters and trainers originally included in the R43.8bn arms deal, which, with a projected additional R22.9bn in interest over 21 years, now totals R66.7bn.
Defence Minister Mosiuou Lekota confirmed that the government planned to buy maritime helicopters for the three corvettes on order, to be delivered at the same time as the corvettes. Lekota said that there was no reason to cancel the second and third parts of the contract for the delivery of the remaning 12 Hawk and 19 single-seat Gripens.
