A South African Air Force (SAAF) helicopter performed a precautionary landing on a golf course this afternoon when indications of a fire were detected.

The Super Lynx maritime helicopter was performing a routine training mission near AFB Ysterplaat in Cape Town when the crew experienced the smell of a fire. They performed a precautionary landing on the Milnerton Golf Course which is situated very close the airforce base.

No injuries were experienced by the three crew and three passengers. It is understood that any presence of fire was put out without damage to the airframe.

SAAF fire and rescue crews from AFB Ysterplaat are believed to be in attendance.

This is the first reported incident involving a SAAF Super Lynx Mk 64 since they were delivered to the SAAF, who operate them on behalf of the SA Navy, in 2007.

SAAF media and spokespeople could not be contacted at the time of this report.
