SUBJECT:    SA AIR FORCE AGUSTA A-109 LIGHT UTILITY HELICOPTER SUSTAINS MINOR DAMAGES DURING A CONTROLLED LANDING INCIDENT

On Wednesday, 05 February 2014 at approximately 15h00, a South African Air Force (SAAF) Agusta A-109 Light Utility Helicopter (A-109 LUH) came in to land at Air Force Station Port Elizabeth (AFS PE) on the designated helicopter pad. The A-109 LUH pilot was undertaking his scheduled second solo flight.

He soon realised that it would be impossible for the Helicopter to land safely and he immediately attempted to climb in order to go-around and re-attempt to land safely. He landed the Helicopter safely on his second attempt.

Unfortunately due to the Helicopter`s proximity to the ground, it made physical contact with the ground and the under-carriage incurred negligible damages. The two-man (2) crew was not injured and there were no fatalities suffered.

The incident will be investigated to determine the sequence(s) and all other factors that may have contributed or led to this incident.
