SANDF spent R14.02-million in Mozambique
Date: 28 March 2001
South African National Defence Force assistance to flood-ravaged Mozambique earlier this month cost R14.02-million (US1.76-million).
President Thabo Mbeki told Parliament in a letter this week that 83 SANDF personnel were deployed in Mozambique from March 1 to 15. Four Oryx helicopters, two BK117 helicopters, two C130 transport aircraft and one C212 light transport aircraft were also sent. The cost of the humanitarian assistance did not include landing, parking, navigational, ground support equipment and lighting surcharge fees, Mbeki said. Why South Africa, which responded to a Mozambican request for help should pay for the latter is unclear. The Dutch government has promised to help fund South Africa's relief mission this year, having contributed about US611.000 towards South Africa's efforts in 2000.
