I saw a pic of an F1AZ on Pinterest up on the border fitted with 6 SAMP T200 French 400kg GP bombs - 4 on centerline rack and one each on outboard wing pylons. The inboard pylons were empty. Would they have fitted external fuel tanks in this heavy bomb configuration (2,400kg) ? Any pics would help. I also noticed in the photo that the rear bombs on the centerline pylon seemed to be oriented to have the fins at 90 degrees whereas the front ones had their fins at 45 degrees to clear the pylon. This seems rather odd. Any comments / info would be appreciated :D

Hi Mistral,

No drop tanks

Here is F1AZ no 231 loaded up in that configuration at Ondangwa during Ops Askari on 7 January 1984
Notice the tailfin of the aircraft in the background....no fin flash or squadron badge and with what I believe to be a lighter different shade of green

If you lock at the spine of this aircraft (I think is is also 231) you will notice that it has the F1CZ cammo pattern!

Here is one loaded in that configuration taking off from Ondangwa

and one returning with a "hangup"

Thanks Greg. The first pic was the one I was referring to in my initial post. Good to see a pic of this config on takeoff :smt023 . Interesting observations on the colour schemes. Thanks :D

Do you have a close-up of the centerline pylon and bombs ?
