My Mother L/Swan Lorna Trow #615803 served as a SWAN on Robben Island, and her brother Lindsay B. Trow with RNUR #68209 7/1933 - 10/1945 in the Pacific, Mediterranean and Far East
I am compiling information on their history and need help deciphering acronyms per the records:
A.S.F.D
A/B
Any ideas please
If by chance anyone has any information on Lorna or Lindsay, I'd appreciate it
Thanks

Tim

Dear Tim
Unfortunately I only saw you question today.

The book "Sailor-Women Sea-Women SWANS" by Margaret P.H. Laver (1982) ISBN 0 620 09853 8
is a very comprehensive history of the South African Women's Auxiliary Naval Service during World War II.
You will find it in most leading libraries and I have seen it in some second-hand bookshops.
It also contains a lengthy list of abbreviations.

A/SFD = Anti-submarine Fixed Defences
A/B = Able-bodied Seaman (naval rank equivalent to that of Lance Corporal in the Army/Airforce)
