Need some colour help here ... the brown is supposed to be Humbrol 29 ... but it looks too light compared to photos :?: The dark earth brown seems to be more suited to be used on the Rooivalk prototypes ... :-k

Brent, H186 is approximately the closest colour to that on the Rooivalk.

Oryx 1238 has also recently been re-painted with that colour and looks ****!

So bad that 17 Sqdn at first stuck a sqdn sticker on the chopper and after AAD sent it down to Ysterplaat!

In fact today,I remarked about that colour on the Oryx to a certain Gen,nuff said!

I will be doing some checks to confirm the colour or the mixture of it.

Geoff

That's a rare photo! Not many exist that show the main optics unit with the lenses exposed. 8)

I've never seen the pilot's optics unit (the small round unit on top of the nose) with the lense(s) showing - I don't even know if it has one or more lenses!

Thanks Geoff !! I've just plugged that colour in & it looks MUCH better already :smt023

Agreed on how it looks on the Oryx ... but like you spotted in the Gripen FAYP thread .. one can see 1238 from miles away now

Hallo Roger.

That unit is called the PNVS and this one on 680 is a dummy. The real ons has 2
lenses.

Will see if I can get a pic.

Thanks Ben - a photo or two would be great!
PNVS = Pilot's Night Vision System. (In spite of the name it is also used in daylight.)

Two lenses means separate day and night cameras rather than a single mode switchable unit.
The pilot has the ability to take control of the 20mm gun if the WSO is busy with other tasks.
The camera is pointed by the helmet sight system which also controls the gun.

Missile aiming and guidance is done only by the larger main optronic system controlled by the WSO in the front seat.
