Indeed, it is probably more a case of "old school" pride, but for me, the old orange tailed SAA aircraft, spur images of a romantic era in aviation

Yes that SprinKbok livery is nice.

I used to really enjoy receiving the little presents (usually Matchbox cars for boys) the flight crew would dish out to kids. That and probably the coolest part of all, being able to visit the flight deck!

Those days are gone now I imagine.

I've got a Flying Springbok DC-3 in the works now ... But yes a 747 must be done ...Did the 400's have orange tails ?

Yes they did, with RB 211 engines. Not sure with GE CF6-80 at that time.

Thanks Mark ... I already have gazillions of unfinished profiles ..but yet I keep starting more ...

I can be thankful that I don't have storage problems with the unfinished work ... or having to worry about bits breaking off in the storage box ... or losing the instructions ... or the canopy getting scratched .. or having the fiddly gear strut eaten by the carpet monster ..

But jeez .. I've got more unfinished profiles, than finished ones

Did SAA operate DC-4s?

Yes, SAA operated six DC-4-1009s and one C-54A from 1956 until 1967 when they were acquired by the SAAF, they were:

ZS-AUA "Tafelberg" - now with Skyclass
ZS-AUB "Outeniqua" - now with the SAA Museum / Skyclass
ZS-AUC "Drakensberg"
ZS-BMF "Amatola" - now with the SAAF Museum as 6902
ZS-BMG "Magaliesberg" - to SAAF, destroyed by fire
ZS-BMH" "Lembombo" - now with the SAA Museum / Skyclass
ZS-BWN "Swartberg" - the sole C-54A

They have a pair of DC-4's still flying, don't they?

Three - listed by Flyingspringbok as "SAA Museum/Skyclass" - ZS-AUA "Tafelberg", ZS-AUB "Outeniqua" and ZS-BMH "Lebombo".

Hi Kremlin,

Here are some pics of the deHavilland Comets as on lease to SAA. These aircraft carried both the SAA markings, Springbok and South African flag, as well as the BOAC markings, Speedbird and Union Jack flag.
Might be a new profile to be seen?
