How many fake Mirage F1 decoys were built over the years and where were they stationed? How are they built? This is quite an interesting part of our military history. There is still one at the Vastrap weapons range in the Northern Cape. Does anyone have pictures of others that were stationed at various locations?

A small number were manufactured (I do not recall how many), made of metal tubing, 'metal' palting and fibre glass IIRC. The 'metal' plates / sections would become warm in the day and if space based IR senors would pick up the decoy, it seemend like a 'hot' aircraft that has been standing outside for a while.

I am a member of various other forums and I can upload an image directly from my desktop to my post. Here you first got to upload it to a image hosting site. I'm sorry but it's not very user friendly. My 5c...

It may not be - but as Mr Wingrin has to pay, out of his pocket, for the hosting it would be just a bit much to ask that he hosts gigabytes of images too, would it not? So your major complaint is not about not knowing how - but being upset that it takes a little more effort?

Roger that Eugene :D

Dean's pocket's are not bottomless nor corporately deep. He funds our "playground" out of his own private wallet, .. hence the appearance of adds on the site which would hopefully generate a tidbit of an income & enable the forum to pay for itself. [-o<

The two decoys I know of are Mirage F1AZ 249 (at 10 AD?) and 253.

Were only two built and were they used in the operational area in SWA?

The Israelis used to (maybe still do) make inflatable decoys - with aluminium strips to fool IR detectors.
Easier to move around the runways - each one had a little pump/blower that kept them inflated and they were tied down with cables. Dead simple to identify from close up - but aerial photography would probably have been fooled.

I have seen a F1 mock up mounted at the entrance to a farm (I think there is a crop spraying business on the farm) outside the town of Nigel en route to Devon - is it one of these decoys ?
