My old man was based on Crash Boat P1552. He took me down to the engine room whilst the boat was going at a stink speed. I never forget the screaming of those turbo's. Man, they made noise! \:D/

Even more exciting is at night, with the lights off, to see the exhaust stubs under the turbo chargers glowing cherry red. BTW by the time you saw P1552 an enormous amount of work had been done to reduce the noise of the turbochargers! You should have heard them before they were silenced!

Do you have any details on P1552? Details like tonnage, length, engines, top speed, sea keeping abilities and what eventually happened to her. All I know is that she was a very fast boat. Something like 40 knots I think. My dad told me a story of them sailing down to Simonstown (early 80's) in a huge winter storm when the one main engine failed and they thought they were going to sink. Did they ever use those hot water baths at the back of the boat? There was always a boat or two on standby. I think they kept the engine room warm with heaters for quick starts.

Is that a Dutch flag I can see? She seems a long way from home for such a little thing if it is!

Is anyone out at sea doing some actual work or is holding up piers the only job the navy does these days?

Is your racehorse out running races all and every day? Naval vessels are racehorses. You spend endless time grooming, training and looking after them for the occasional race. Coast guard ships are carthorses - they plod around endlessly pulling the vegetable cart.
