Hi Everybody

Can someone out there please tell me why the Ex-SAAF Buc 416 is parked outside between 2 hangers at the military section at CT Int. This Buc was always on static display since delivered to the SAAF Museum at Ysterplaat in 1991 and was later transfered to Thunder City for static display there. Surely this prized museum aircraft should be treated better than having it parked outside and let the elements take its toll. 416 and her stablemates gave excellent service to the SAAF and country during their service in the SAAF and according to Dick Lord was most propably the best aircraft in the SAAF inventory during the bush war. Why is she not taken back to the museum at Ysterplaat or at least stored in one of the nearby hangers. How does the friends of the SAAF museum feel about the current situation?
We are very fortunate to still have the Thunder City Buc's flying in the RSA as they do not have any in the UK. Come on I am sure this can be sorted out.[-X

I have to agree - but most of all, we have a few aircraft rotting outside at Swartkop - wonder if a major company like MTN / Vodacom can't sponsor the SAAF with a roof overhead there... They can paint their logo on top for aerial advertising. Might as well push some Rands forward to look after some of the aircraft as well, and hopefully sponsor some material for the volunteers who restore these aircraft.

OR hopefully someone knows a company who may be interested in sponsoring something like that.

I will not get into the sorry history of why the Buc was left where it is now, but plans are being made to return the Buc to Ysterplaat.

The problem is that the aircraft is heavy and the undercarriage is in danger of collapsing should it be towed. Therefore, it will need to be transported on a lowbed which requires careful planning with a number of traffic departments.

There are at least two other organisations currently in discussion to restore and display the Buc, one a flying club and the other a military museum, both in the Cape Town area.

Still between the hangers. :(

However, approval was given a few months ago for new cradles to be manufactured and plans are in motion to bring her back, albeit slow progress.

The process to get 416 back to Ysterplaat is running smoothly.
The cradles on which she will rest on a lowbed truck are ready and negotiations with authorities re road transport etc are underway.

It would be a pity if 416 were disposed of, as it is probably the most famous of all SAAF Buccs, being the one in which Dries Marais staved off an Angolan panzer attack on a SADF expeditionary force being airlifted by some SAAF Pumas, thereby earning a well deserved Honoris Crux - refer to SAAF at war by Bouwer / Louw.

Not yet.
I spoke to the people involved yesterday. A date for the move is not yet fixed, but the commitment is there to bring her home.
