Thought it would be a good idea to start a 'Humbrol SAAF paint reference', the idea being that you post a picture of the subject to show the colours (so no misunderstandings!) and then pop in the Humbrol numbers that 'work' for you.

By no means the last word, these are some that I have used and have also been suggestions from others on this forum.

Mod: Use this site to convert between the various colour specs and model paint manufacturers: The Ultimate Model Paint Conversion Chart

What better way to start than with a classic Mirage IIICZ
Image
Mirage IIICZ
Deep Buff; 63 Sand (may need up to 10% 34 White to tone it down)
Green; 75 Bronze Green
Admiralty Grey; 65 Aircraft Blue (may need 10-20% 34 White to tone it down)

Image
Mirage F1AZ (late scheme)
Dark Brown; 29 Dark Earth
Dark Green; 30 Dark Green
Grey Blue undersides; 230 PRU blue (may need to tone it down with 34 White by 10-20%)

Image
Canberra
PRU blue; 230 PRU Blue (may need to tone it down with 34 White by 10-20%)

Recently added courtesy of Dean (Bladerunner provided the Humbrol match);
Image
Dark brown; 29 Dark Earth
Dark green; 30 Dark Green
'Cream'; 121 Pale Stone

Thanks to Dean and Bladerunner again
Image
Nose/Radome: 127 Light Ghost Grey
Body/Overall; 128 US Compass Grey
'Diamond'; 125 US Dark Grey

Hi there Parabat,

Excellent idea!!!

I have been doing a bit of thinking (and eyeballing)... and the Tamiya neutral grey comes quite close to the grey underside of the F1AZ late scheme.

I have the humbrol pru blue and and it seems 'too' blue, if you get what I mean?? But then again, you could park two AZs together and they would be slightly different.. so too would any pics of the aircraft.

Roger,

Added a 'tone down' of white to the PRU Blue. It is a bit blue/dark, but as has been discussed on many forums, most paints need 'scaling down' anyway. And then factoring in the aircrafts' abuse/care to replicate fading/finish...

Thanks for the Tamiya Neutral Grey suggestion too, I know there are a lot of guys who use Tamiya paints too.
Maybe we can combine this into Humbrol/Tamiya work?

Parabat

This was a great idea Parabat! But how about adding other paints such as Tamiya and revell as well?

Nico

I'm not familiar with these paints, maybe someone can start another thread for Tamiya and Revell?

I would only be putting in trade colour chart equivalents, to which I'm sure people would be saying 'oh, but that is wrong etc etc.'

I'll be damned...Bladerunner is back!
Nice topic though...don't forget BR's custom mixed paints, available at all good hobby outlets. How's that Caravan, BK117, Gripen update(72 and 48), Frelon, Hawk coming along?

Why don't Air Forces save everyone a whole lot of hassle and just use standard Humbrol or Tamiya paint colours? \:D/

Imagine the headline - 'Humbrol scoops SAAF contract'!
Wouldn't like footing the bill for all those tins they'd need though...

Hey, thanks for this invaluable info. I bought some local (expensive) SAAF enamel model colours but it hardened before I could use them.
I topped up the bottles with enamel thinners in the hope it will thin them out enough to draw out a sample.

Thanks Dean for the link.

The following link I sometimes make use of. It explains how the FS paint system works, gives you a sample of the colour related to the FS number, well that depend on what our computer screens put out. There is a list of colours used by different air force's with a suggested paint number by model paint manufacturer.
Part II, they have a list of colours from different paint manufacturers like Humblrol. When I don't have the right colour, I try to find one that is close by useing the FS number system. Hope it helps.
