But seeing the dust on those aircraft, the cracks, the broken canopies, the glue from duct tape around the canopies, was something that hurt. Yes, it's run by volunteers and there's no money, but c'mon, it isn't that difficult to make some protective covers for those aircraft.

Hi Gripen
How about joining us at the museum on Saturday mornings from 09h00 onwards.
We need more volunteers.

That is seriously cool! I used to have a reprint of a painting by Frank... surname started with a "W" and it showed a single spitfire emerging from the clouds, also a Mark V (I think) which were IIRC the first Spitfires to be fitted with 20mm cannon?
Seriosly awesome indeed, the detail is stunning .. Jolly good show Monique :smt023

Many years ago the lavatory at the SAAF Museum Ysterplaat was prominently labelled Larry Barnett Room - shortly after he sold Evelyn to some Yankee with mucho dollars.

@ Kremlin: *blush*

It was my second painting that, glad it has a good home.

@ H1017412: I think it was Frank Wooton, can't remember the title though.

@ Gripen:. Why not do as Fix-A-Dak suggests??? If just one person of you lot that complain, but aren't involved as a volunteer, gave one weekend a month, it would make a difference...

Yes, that's the one - it was a such a good size too for a study. I do wish that I still had it. As Kremlin mentioned, that is great attention to detail. I hope that you continue to paint :)

Unfortunately I have other commitments, and can't offer to help at this stage.

A bit late, but non-the-less.

Fix-a-dak, I would love to volunteer my time to assist at the Museum, but can only be one - max two times a month as I have medics commitments.

Let me know

I also suffer from the problem with not enough time to commit my services to the museum (Zwartkops),though I do many things for the museum after hours when I cannot obtain access to the base.

One of the things is that I build models for displays, other duties entail the marshalling/training of marshallers for the Zwartkop show.

Another is the training of guides that take the tour groups around the museum.

There are many things that can be done to volunteer your services for the museum, not necessarily cleaning aircraft, though I have also organised many youth groups in the past to help with plane washing!

Very nice all round. Although they have never had the flying aircraft profile the Pretoria Museum has, I've always been extreemly impressed with the Ysterplaat exhibits quality and the pleasant atmosphere at the Museum. Loved the Shack models (desert prang diorama very good) and great painting of Bob Rogers' Spitfire. (Liked the Larry Barnett Room story!!!) Very nice.

Now this brings back memories, because myself, Alic Sandenbergh, Karen Sandenbergh and a few others built this display. A lot of hard work, but it was fun.

I have a similar picture that I took when I was there a few weeks ago. I too was quite impressed with the display :)

The display is excellent, the only rectification is the Italian flag needs to be made correct for the period, it is missing the Coat of Arms on the white
