Painting started - first pre-shading selected panel lines with Tamiya X-18 - rather crude but does the job :

Blue in the process of application - I think the Daks had something similar to PRU blue on undersides - anyway, approximated colour as follows : 10 parts Model Master FS35164 Intermediate Blue : 8 parts Tamiya X-2 White : 2 parts Tamiya X-14 blue

Pre-shading just shows through.

Thanks guys :D

Here's the main u/c painted same colour as underside - top one has been weathered with black pastels and dry brushed with Humbrol Matt white to highlight raised detail - doesn't show too well in pic.

Tan applied - I use gloss XtraColor piants - saves me a gloss varnish coat before applying decals - only problem is I have to wait for about a week for the paint to fully dry.

Interesting debate on other forums about recessed rivetting on Trumpeter kit - the purists reckon they should be raised as on the real thing ! :?

Looking great Mistral! That pre-shading certainly is highly effective, lovely stuff.

Raised rivets?! Just wouldn't look right, it would be a real problem to 'repair' damaged rivets from sanding etc.

Hi Mistral,

The camo scheme for the Daks were Dark Earth,Dark Green ( Green Olive Drab on some paint schemes) and PRU blue undersides.

The Tan is a too light colour and also too glossy.

Build is looking good so far!

Thanks for the comments AT6C. I agree, the brown looks too light. Although my photos of the Dak at Swartkop show a lighter brown than Dark Earth ?? The glossiness will be dulled down with matt coat once decals applied.

Don't know the photo, could it be from too much sun? :smt004 It does look a bit light.

Hi folks.

Just my opinion...

I think the brown on this Dakota could be just fine as long as when the green is added it is faded to match.

Remember that the matt colour's on these aircraft faded significantly and at times the brown even took on a yellowish gold tinge!

Have a look here http://saairforce.co.za/gallery-and-med ... a#viewport

That's my 2 cents worth

Stunning build as always Mistral, great stuff!

I second your opinion gregair. :smt023

Besides, I like the idea of airbrushing the model in already faded colours. In general we would paint it factory fresh, and then weather it. Should save a lot of time. It's also easier to weather from lighter colours to darker ones, than the other way round.

Watching with interest.

Cheers
John

Thanks for all the comments - much appreciated.

I think the problem is that the tan I used is possibly too yellow. I need to dull the yellow down a bit. However, I think the lightness is OK as the matt camo did fade drastically - I recall the C-160 at Swartkop about 2 years ago before they repainted it - the dark green actually faded to a light brown/olive drab colour.

Next challenge is matching the green !!! :?
