Can anybody shed some light on these gaps ? Code letetrs as displayed on the Mirage IIICZ's natural metal delivery scheme. I've also seen "F" , "N" & "Z", but am unable to make out the aircraft serial no's. They don't seem to have any order or follow any pattern.

800 - red "A"
801 - red "B"
802 - red "L"
803 - red "S"
804 - red "D"
805 - red "E"
806 - red "F"
807 - red "G"
808 - ?
809 - ?
810 - red "K"
811 - ?
812 - ?
813 - red "P"
814 - red "O"
815 - ?

From John Boardman;

Quote:
Regarding this aircraft it is No 800 "A". Mir 801 was "B" , Mir 802 was "L", Mir 803 was "S", Mir 804 was "C" ?? - crazy but true.

The reason for this "odd" allocation of alphabetical letters (802 & 803)is as follows.

Mirages 800 & 801 were delivered to us in France for use on the conversion course and numbered A & B.

Mir 802 & 803 were the first ones delivered to the RSA. Cliff Melville then took the decision to allocate aircraft to pilots at the squadron as they were delivered. He then selected the letter "L" for 802 ( he called his wife Lucy), I was then allocated 803 and chose the letter "S" - Why "S" - very logical, I had two girlfriends at that time, the one's Christian name started with a "S" and the other one's Surname also started with a "S".

Then sanity prevailed and AFHQ promptly put a halt to this ad-hoc numbering system.

Another Mirage III serial to code letter finally confirmed :D
815 = C

So we now have:
800 - A
801 - B
802 - L
803 - S
804 - D
805 - E
806 - F
807 - G
808 - ?
809 - ?
810 - K
811 - ?
812 - ?
813 - P
814 - O
815 - C

Only missing four codes now.

Cheers

If you want the IIIBZ's, I see that 818 was "R".

We now have:

804 - D
805 - E
806 - F
807 - G
808 - H
809 - ?
810 - K
811 - ?
812 - ?

Whilst you guys figure out the codes and numbers, I tend to look who's in the picture .... leading the procession is the then Minister of Defence, PW Botha (Piet Wapen was an oft used nickname).
Would those Mirages be parked in the hangar at Waterkloof?

Another CZ :D

During the early 1970's, numerous colour schemes were tried on the Mirage CZ's, before the scheme of mid buff and olive green was finally chosen. Mirage III CZ N° 809 is depicted here as seen in January 1974, with a matt dark earth / dark green scheme. The castle roundel is positioned far back on the intake.

Thanks gregair :D

There is some colour change on the ventral fuel tank, but none under the rear fuselage, nor the intake & nose ... so underneath looks like dark earth to me :?:

No Republican / Catholic Irishman would agree with you though :D that Orange white and blue is good. They hate the Prince of Orange whose flag that is.

Thanks for the reference photo Pepster :smt023

Mirage III BZ #817 (c/n 229) N° 2 Squadron "The Flying Cheetahs", Waterkloof AFB.

Interesting to note the rear curtain, which when closed during IFR training, prevented the pilot in the backseat from seeing outside.

Mirage III EZ #828 (c/n 411) N° 3 Squadron, AFB Waterkloof, 1974.
N° 3 squadron was re-activated in August 1966, to take delivery of the Mirage IIIEZ's. The squadron operated their 16 EZ's until the arrival of the new Mirage F1CZ's in April 1975. In the eight years that the squadron operated the Mirage IIIEZ's, one aircraft was lost. This loss occurred on the 15th March 1969, following an EZ four-ship flypast for the opening of the second South African Games in Bloemfontein. Returning to AFB Waterkloof after the flypast, Lt. Ren W. Colyn in #821 reported losing power. He was unable to make an emergency landing at Jan Smuts Airport, and safely ejected, with the aircraft being destroyed after crashing near Baragwaneth Hospital. With the pending arrival of the F1CZ's, the Mirage III's on squadron strength were in October 1974, transferred to N° 85 Advanced Flying School, AFB Pietersburg. The aircraft transferred to 85 AFS, also included the Mirage III DZ's & D2Z's operated by the squadron. The aircraft is depicted here with a 1300 litre drop-tank and an empty AAM launcher rail.
