Seen yesterday, not sure how long she's been there or if this is the same vessel snapped by AllanRoy, & worked on by baseline.. ? This is M1083 ex-ULM.

Thanks :D

They don't seem to be making too much progress there then ... or there is more work than we realise.

Cheers

Ulm is still there and another laid up that had its bridge rebuilt. Perhaps its an ongoing project.

As a former crew member (Radio Operator) of the KONSTANZ it was very sad toe see pictures of the inglourious end of it :( . I was on it in 1966 /67 and KAONSTANZ was real good boat with very good rough sea behaviour. We have been actively swiping mines in German waters of the NORTH SEA.
I am crying some tears!!

here is a picture of the KONSTANZ M1081 from better times. This picture was taken in summer 67 in the Baltic Sea while passing the LABOE Navy Memorial for the seamen died at sea (all Navy vessel dip the flag, when passing)

Hey Wully, don't know if you saw this prior, but WELCOME to the forum :smt023 I think we all share your pain on the fate of the Konstanz, but, I feel it is a more dignified end, than being cut up for scrap ...

Thanks for posting the pic of Konstanz from better times .. :D

Cheers

The question was asked as to how many of these ships actually entered service with the SA navy.

The SA Navy purchased six Type351 'Troika' mine countermeasure vessels from the German navy in 2000. The arrived in Simonstown on the 9th March 2001, aboard the submersible barge UR-161 The barge being towed by the tug 'Fairplay XIV'. The last two were only to be used for spares as required. Of the remaining four, all were named by the SA navy, however, only two were commissioned into service. (Kapa & Thekwini) The decision was made to name them after SA cities and they then became known as the 'City' class.

M1221 - SAS Tshwane (ex-FGS Schleswig M1073) - entire service in reserve.
M1222 - SAS Mangaung (ex-FGS Paderborn M1076) - entire service in reserve.
M1223 - SAS Kapa (ex-FGS Duren M1079) - commissioned 5th September 2001.
M1225 - SAS Thekwini (ex-FGS Wolfsburg M1082) - commissioned 5th September 2001.

(ex-FGS Ulm M1083) - purchased for spares.
(ex-FGS Konstanz M1081) - purchased for spares. Sunk as an Exocet target during Exercise Red Lion, 1st November 2007 in which SAS Amatola & SAS Isandlwana each fired one missile.

With the exception of Konstanz, all were still afloat, and seen at Simonstown during the navy festival 2010.

Cheers

Kapa seems to have had some extensive modification work done to the bridge.

ex-ULM is still out of the water & on the synchrolift.

As far as I'm aware, the wooden mine sweeper is no longer used in that role, but as a training and diver supprot vessel.

well the 5 ships were bought by a private buyer, a close friend of mine.
i was asked not to divulge too much info.
but yes they are being refitted to become luxury craft, im involved with the airconditioning/refrigeration/electrical side of the refit and also general planing
