so, the lynx discussion has lead to this:
What choppers do the police fly?
sparked from the new aquisition of two eurocopters, making a fleet of 16, what else do they fly?
i dont know numbers foresure and put it out for you to say.
b105 13

I've been searching for an up to date list of aircraft of the SAPS Air Wing but haven't succeeded.
I'm looking for types, numbers, where they are based/area served. I'm looking for both fixed wing and helicopter information.
The fleet listed on Wikipedia at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_African_Police_Service#Air_Wing is clearly out of date.

They have alot more Pilatus than are on the list, will have alook at my photo's ans see if I can get more serial numbers.

At the last Task Force jump in Pietermaritzburg in 2009 there were 4 Pilatus present.

The SAPS main Air Wing base is at the Pretoria West Police college. Which is just over the hill from Voortrekkerhoogte and next door to Westkoppies Mental Institution

The SAPS have had a total of 24 Bo 105 but a number have been written off in crashes, some are

ZS-HNY W/O Crash Umnagazi River 25/12/1995
ZS-RAW W/O Crash Meadowlands, Soweto 04/07/2008
ZS-HRF W/O Crash Heidelburg Highway chase 31/05/1997

A number of McDonalds have also been written off during dagga spraying operations

I initially searched for "South African Police" & got the list above, a search for "SAP" yielded one more ..

# ZS-APS PILATUS PC-12/47

The hunt is on :D

Cheers

are we ever really going to know what is in active service? thats really the question. ive been searching for the fixed wing numbers and all contradict each other.
Take for example the recent up and downs for the bk117 in saaf; transferred to saps one day, retired the next, mothballed later and remaines now in active service.
its all a numbers game. surely if we had more than 60 posts for fighter pilots, we would have a cheetah fleet active today. we cant have more aircraft than pilots, let alone technicians.
i mean lets take a look at algeria here, little off topic, they dont have the infrastructure we have and field alot more air land and see crafts then us. and we are number 10 in peacekeeping in the un....?
i quess thats why dean has the site, to answer the very questions that we have.
So to finish, i recon we will never trully know whats active as a craft could be mothballed and labelled maintanance or vice versa. Or, may i venture r and d? i mean denel had to test out those uavs and cameras on the different crafts before installing them. Reason thats important is because even though denel still gets funding for the cheetah and has example at tsdc it is not active.

Thats my rant
lekker bly

As a correspondent for Defence Web, I had a minor input into the Defence Web article.

There was some discussion as to where the total of 16 quoted by Naidoo came from. I could only come up with the following:

Total AS350 in service: 13
Written-off: 1
New purchase: 2
Total: 16
