Q: At what range would Rooivalk fire its unguided rockets and 20mm at a target on real Operations?

A: Cannon from 500m to 2500m, rockets normally 2000m to 6000m

There's a lot that can be said about colour coding of airborne weapons.

In short: The body colour of ammunition pre-1983 was used to indicate what type of ammunition it was. This changed after 1983 to a more camouflage type of coating, mainly as a requirement of the client.

Mistral on SAAF Museum Mirage III colours:

RZ #835 was painted in the two tone grey and had sharkmouth painted prior to retirement and delivery to SAAF Museum Swartkop. It was then repainted in standard NATO grey/green/silver which was the original delivery scheme for all four RZs. These were taken from French production aircraft hence NATO camo.
RZ #837 was painted in three tone grey/blue low vis. Currently resides at Bloem in buff/green/blue with black nose cone (which is not correct).
RZ #838 was delivered to SAAF Museum swartkop with teeth added. Was in matt, feathered buff/green/blue. Later repainted after delivery to SAAF Museum in the gloss hard edge buff/green/blue which was used for R2Zs.
RZ #836 was modified with 09K50 engine as part of Cheetah programme. Airframe later used to repair Cheetah 844.

Mirage 111RZ 838 arrived at the SAAF Museum with the shark mouth painted on. The shark mouth was originally painted on by the ground crew for a weapons camp held shortly before retirement of the type.

838's paint scheme was looking tatty and it was decided to get her resprayed.
A sponsor for the paint and the labour needed to do the job came to light, only problem was that the sponsor was situated in Randfontein on the West Rand.

The logistical problem was to get the aircraft to the sponsor, the SAAF couldn't help with the transportation of the aircraft and the only remedy was to tow the Mirage to Randfontein.
Approvals had to be obtained from the various authorities and various logistical nightmares had to be sorted out including spare tyres should there be a need to change tyres en-route.

When the Mirage arrived back at Swartkop it didn't have the shark mouth and it was decided that the shark mouth be painted on again.
This was done by Willie ( Buskruit) Burger who did an amazing job to get it right.

Peter De La Rey sourced the sponsor and got all the logistical nightmares and approvals.
