Yup. The SAAF these days does as much dual-purpose mission tasking as it can, in order to make the best use of its hours. Usually that's incorporating training or practice into scheduled ceremonial or demonstration activities, but sometimes it's the other way around. For instance that mostly misreported story about 2 Squadron Gripens helping to prevent rhino poaching was just a reference to their use of FAR78 for DJRP & LITENING practice and passing on anything of interest to SANParks.
That one of the Gripens at Ysterplaat carried the DJRP is interesting. 2 Squadron has performed a couple of maritime interdictions in the past, showing off their capability as a rapid-response option for identifying unknown ships with their surveillance pods. They've also used that capability against SAN submarines once or twice.
Another one that's commonly misunderstood is the Air Capability Demo at Roodewal. While it might seem like an unnecessary waste of money for a demonstration, it's actually vital as a way for both existing aircrew and ground-based forward air controllers to retain their currencies and for new ones to achieve their qualifications.
