The following pictures are not of an Airshow. They were taken at RAF Waddington, England, on Monday 9 September and it shows the dedication (fanaticism) of aviation photographers to get their pictures. The RAF is currently hosting Exercise Cobra Warrior with assets from the Air Forces of Israel, Germany and Italy participating - the first deployment of Israeli aircraft to the UK. The Israeli aircraft (seven F-15's) are from 106 'Spearhead' Squadron.

In South Africa it's the sun, in England it's often the rain, but come they will. The following shots were all taken from a small parking area next to RAF Waddington. Between the parking area and the Airbase is a busy main road, the people you see standing along a fence is on the other side of the road. Road signs and police were very visible to alert and slow traffic down, showing much tolerance in allowing photographers to do their thing - commendable! Furthermore, it was raining lightly, some are in shorts with no rain protection, cameras and equipment exposed to the elements. No, I did not get wet, I had rain protection, only taking the camera out when necessary over a wet two hour period.

Thank you Dean, 'Mars' and 'H' for your kind comments. I say 'act1225' those R2-D2 bulges behind the cockpits is an (Israeli) addition that makes the F-15 such an enduring platform. The F-15 is still unbeaten in operational use, win to loss ratio is 104 / 0.
More pictures will follow soon of movements at Exercise Cobra Warrior 2019, it comes to an end this Friday. The authorities have been most tolerant of us photographers on the fence line, something to be very grateful for!

I certainly agree with you. The F-15 platform is an excellent design, but it should also be said that it has never gone up against a equal foe. Their enemies more often than not had excellent equipment but not the skills to employ or maintain them well. Syria, Iraq, Lebanon etc didn't exactly put on a serious fight.

Photo of the day, every picture tells a story, in this case check out the vehicle towing the Luftwaffe Eurofighter - a Mercedes-Benz! A sparkling clean baby Unimog, I think a U423. Exercise Cobra Warrior 2019.

Israeli Air Force departures day:-

The fence line at RAF Waddington, just south of the city of Lincoln, England, was packed with photographers by 08.00, all awaiting the departure of two Israeli Boeing 707 tankers and the seven Israeli F-15C/D fighters. The action did not disappoint! Now imagine in your mind's eye the following. RAF Waddington has a 3,000m runway which has a nice little downward slope after about 2,000m when taking off from southwest to northeast. It was a windless day, so nothing to help lift two heavies fully laden for a long haul back across the Mediterranean to Israel. The first 707 let go of the brakes at 09.37 from the far side of the Airbase, we could hear those P/W turbofans screaming at full power, down the runway it came into the dip and slowly it lifted, first the front wheel and then, almost reluctantly, the main wheels. We stood in silence, watching, and then a collective murmur of joy as the tankers lifted off the runway clearing the hedge, fencing and road, with not much to spare. It was a sight to behold!

This was followed in short succession by all seven Israeli F-15 fighters thundering past us on afterburners, banking and climbing steeply with condensation on the wings, as if to say their own kind of goodbye to us down below. A grand finale to three weeks of sheer aviation spectacle!

Tail art / graphics:-
The picture shows a Eurofighter from TLG 74 (Taktisches Luftwaffengeschwader 74) with tail art depicting Johannes Steinhoff, a former WW2 Luftwaffe fighter pilot. TLG 74 used to honour the memory of Werner Mölders, also a former WW2 fighter pilot. However, Mölders was deemed unsuitable in 2005, after having honoured him since 1973, because of the Luftwaffe participation in the Spanish Civil War of 1938 where Mölders was a Squadron Leader. So, the Mölders graphics were removed and replaced with Steinhoff graphics. The decision in 2005 was a political one, not one made by the military.
The picture was taken (9 Sept) whilst raining from underneath an umbrella, unlike those getting wet at the fence. Note the Israeli F-15 in the background.
