Sadly you are informed that Lt Gen D.J. Earp, SSA, SD, SOE, SM, SAAF (Retired) has answered the Sunset Call last night, 19 May 2019.

He joined the SAAF in 1950 and after qualifying as a pilot served in Korea with 2 Squadron SAAF, flying Mustangs. He was forced to bale out over enemy territory and was a POW for 23 months. Genl Earp served as Chief of the Air Force from 1984 to 1988.

I fondly remember our chats together and he wrote the forward to my book Tumult in the Clouds.

Sincere condolences to his wife Beth and family.

At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
WE WILL REMEMBER THEM.

Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of earth,
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
Of sun-split clouds, --and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of --Wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov'ring there
I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air...
Up, up the long, delirious, burning blue
I've topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace
Where never lark or even eagle flew --
And, while with silent lifting mind I've trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.

Passing of a great SAAF icon. I recall his flip with Menno Parsons in Mustang Sally in 2011. His first flight in a P-51D since being shot down in Korea if I have it right. The smile on his face....
