Great pics Dean!!

What are the "Um boats" currently used for? Inshore patrol? Have they had their mine sweeping equipment removed? What is the status then of the T-craft?

Will the BIRO vessels replace both the 'Um boats' and the Strike Craft?

Thanks in advance for any replies. :smt023

Thanks James.

The T-craft have been put of the water for quite a few years as they were never effective in the inshore patrol roll.

The new IPV procured under BIRO (the largest boats constructed in Cape Town) will replace both the strike craft and the Um boats in the inshore patrol role.

No those are not railings!
Those are communication antenna supplied by Reutech Communications. The antennas are manufactured by Alaris Antennas in Centurion and supplied to Reutech who then add these antennas to the naval craft as part of the modernised communications packages.
You can see these on other naval craft as well. There are some good paics showing those antennae on the Frigates as well...

They are grey on the frigates...

My father used to service Namacurra's back in the day. The outboard motors were just coming in then. He certainly did not like "these red things" on the bow. Now I can finally tell him what they are. :smt023

Interesting, admittedly I thought you were joking at first!
