SA NAVY – BERTHING INCIDENT BETWEEN SAS SPIOENKOP AND SAS DRAKENSBERG

The SA Navy confirms that there was a minor berthing incident that occurred on Thursday, 13 December 2018 at 15h30.

SAS SPIOENKOP collided with SAS DRAKENSBERG while entering Simon’s Town harbour, guided by the Naval Harbour Master and the Navy tugs.

SAS SPIOENKOP was returning from sea where she conducted engine trials when the incident occurred. There was a mechanical or communication system deficiency on-board the Frigate at a critical time when the ship was supposed to reduce speed. Despite valiant efforts
from the tugs to reduce her speed, SAS SPIOENKOP collided with SAS DRAKENSBERG which was berthed alongside. Both ships sustained minor damage above the waterline. The damage will NOT affect either the ships’ watertight integrity.

The cause of the incident is to be investigated and a Board of Enquiry will be established to determine circumstances that led to the incident.

Simulator training or not, it's extremely difficult to control a few thousand tons of metal with no brakes, floating in a fluid at low speed via remote control of the vessel you're standing on and two others alongside. (Yeah, I know, clumsy sentence structure, but you get what I mean. )

Fortunately, the damage was minimal.

My cousin's best mate's brother is a panel beater. He will fix that sommer over the weekend, and all it will cost is a sixpack and a bottle of brannas.

It's clearly just a minor ding, hardly worth turning into a media circus. Both ships should be fixed fairly easily.

Was asking about simulators out of interest. Would be rather expensive doing this in the real thing. Just like aeries.

Yes, they have a full simulation section at SAS Simonsberg, including a Bridge Simulator.

It would be interesting to see what the BoI concludes. Simon's Town is a tricky-ish harbour, over the years both the Royal Navy and the SA Navy have seen their ships ding the edges during entrances and exits, especially during bad weather. Still, a signal to slow down should've been executed quickly, so whether this was a crew mistake or a mechanical failure it's pretty serious and I'm sure Flag Officer Fleet will want that report sooner rather than later.

Good work by the tug crews to keep things from being worse.
