We can only dream......

Does the SAN currently have an ocean racing yacht? They used to do well in various races in the past.

New Command for NS Elephant and Activation of Squadrons

24th May 2018 marks another historical day in the Navy when they witness the change of command of NS Elephant when CDR Gabriel Iyambo relieved Capt (N) C Moshoeshoe from his duty. Rear Admiral (JG) AP Amungulu officiated the ceremony. Admiral highlighted that the change of command is a vital part in their quest to build capacity by empowering young officers to exercise command at sea in order to groom and bridge the gap between the veterans and the young. Amungulu encouraged the NS Elephant crew to be proud that they got an outstanding commanding officer.
The incoming commander thanked the navy authority specifically CNO for entrusting him with the important responsibility of command. Cdr Iyambo assured the appointing authority that he will strive to perform his duties to the fullest in order for the unit to contribute to the achievement of the Navy’s overall goals and objectives. “I am aware of the challenges lying ahead, however I am taking up these challenges with the view of turning them into opportunities. These are the opportunities that will allow us to grow, learn and to enhance our naval experiences”. Said CDR Iyambo.
On a different event, the Namibian navy witnessed the first ever activation of squadrons. The change of command and activation of squadrons are long standing traditions within the NDF and the Navy in particular. At the Activation of Squadron, Capt (N) G Pandeni appointed to command Combat Squadron, Capt (N) C Moshoeshoe command Combat Support Squadron, CDR S Kapuire command Coastal Patrol Squadron and Lt (N) K Hainghumbi appointed to command Harbour Patrol Squadron.

Navy Participates in the Crayfish festival

The Namibian Navy participated in the 2019 Crayfish festival. The Navy vessels, NS Elephant, NS Daures and NS Brukkaros also paid a port call in the habour town of Lüderitz during the Navy annual exercise code named #HUA HURIB III (Blue Ocean III) which coincided with the Cray Fish Festival. The residence of Lüderitz had the opportunity to tour on the Naval vessels.
Navy Commander, Rear Admiral Sinsi Ndeshi Bamba Nghipandua also hosted a cocktail on board NS Elephant for dignitaries

Am sure its moments like these the Navy brass would wish the NS Elepant had a flight Hangar

Naval Base Impalila officially commissioned
Image
Quote:
A NAVAL base and a jetty were commissioned by defence minister Penda Ya Ndakolo at Impalila Island in the Zambezi region.

The base, known as the Naval Base Impalila was inaugurated on Friday.

Ya Ndakolo explained that the base was a naval base for the South African Defence Force before Namibia's independence and was thereafter used by the Impalila community as a secondary school until 2012.

In August 2014, the defence ministry started rehabilitating the base and completed it in October 2017 while work on the jetty started in April 2016 until October 2017, he said.

The minister said before the rehabilitation, there were many security challenges such as illegal border crossing, unregulated fishing, poaching, theft and drug smuggling at the island.

This had triggered the Namibian navy to establish a naval district covering Zambezi, Chobe and Okavango rivers.

“It is against this background that this base and its supporting facilities were constructed,” the minister added.

He said since the navy was deployed and started patrolling the area, the security challenges had gone down.

“The navy conducted individual and joint operations with the Namibian Police Force, Impalila Conservancy Authority, local community, Botswana Defence Force and police. These operations reduced the threat of crime in the area and made the local community safer,” Ya Ndakolo boasted.

He continued that the improved security further created a favourable environment for cooperation between neighbours Namibia, Zambia and Botswana.

The new base consists of accommodation facilities, a sewage treatment plant, an electricity plant, and a floating jetty for docking with a slipway for launching and removing boats from the water.

Commander Christian Keendjele was commissioned as the first commanding officer of the NBI.
