SANDF officer falls to his death during training demonstration

An investigation has been launched into the circumstances leading up to the death of a Sergeant who fell out of a helicopter during a roping demonstration at the weekend.

Sergeant Goodwill Kabelo Moagi accidentally fell from a SA Air Force Oryx helicopter during a demonstration at the weekend. The demonstration was hosted in Phalaborwa on Saturday.

South African National Defence Force (SANDF) spokesperson, Brigadier General Mafi Mgobozi, said the 32-year-old officer was stationed at 7 Medical Battalion.

“We are saddened by the passing away of a SANDF member. A formal investigation has been launched to determine the sequence of events that led to the fatal incident. Sergeant Moagi was the team leader when the incident happened,” Mgobozi said.

He said messages of condolences from the Minister of Defence and Military Veterans, Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula, the Secretary for Defence, Dr Sam Gulube and the Chief of the South African National Defence Force, General Solly Shoke have been conveyed to Moagi’s family and colleagues.

Very unfortunate.

Without knowing more information, there is also a risk that familiarity and adrenaline leads to oversight. The only reason I mention this is that this is the second serious incident at a capability demonstration within in two weeks.

Equipment failure also cant be ruled out.
