Hi Guys, I have found so many conflicting images. Was the engine cradle on the P51

a) Green Zinc Chromate

B) Yellow Zinc Chromate

c) Olive Drab

d) Silver

Every single photograph I look at seems to differ.

I am busy with the 1/24 Trumpeter P51, and they callout Olive Drab , and Metallic Blue Green in places. What is Metallic Blue Green?

Any pointers will be appreciated.

Hey Drifter,

The engine bearer assembly on Patsy Dawn is a dark green.

Whether this is a version of green zinc chromate or olive drab, I'm not sure.

I'd go with green or yellow zinc chromate. I doubt that engine bearers would have been in bare metal or OD. Interiors of US aircraft were variable painted in one of the chromate colours but later in the war, certain interior areas on some aircraft left bare metal either to save weight or just because they didn't think it was necessary. But like everything pertaining to WWII, there's no guarantee that any absolute regulation would have been applied consistently. Just ask the Germans from 44/45. BTW, have you ever seen how variable the hue and weathering olive drab was in period pics of USAAF bombers and fighters.

I don't agree with this as it would lead to corrossion on the parts, wings, fuselage etc., wherever the part was used.

I have seen sections of wings, fuselage, etc., that are usually covered with "aly" cladding and they all have a zinc chromate covering on it.

Luckily we have a rear fuselage that is still natural metal outer with the American Star on it and Interior Green on the inside. I would say that the Humbrol Interior Green is the closest colour to this.

I went with this:

I got this kit for a steal, this is where I am at: I also have the engine fitted but the pics are terrible. All in all it has been an effortless build, just a pity the kit seat is too small.

Thank you :)

The photographs I have date back to around 1999/ 2000 but the quality is not all that great.

Cockpit looks great, Drifter :smt023

Stratobat
