Nice, I have one of those too (1986 mfr). The pilot must have been a jockey as there's no way I can fit into it!

Mines at the other end of the spectrum ... long!

It complements my Aerazur Type 817-M2 anti-g suit which arrived with the Mirage IIIs.

Mine's also a Mk2 A SPEC: KA3259 (Made 1986) Size: Small Regular. Are these South African or foreign produced? Also trying to figure the most effective way to display it? Over a mannequin wearing a flightsuit would be the most obvious answer but the ones I've available here are not jockey dimensions either.

I'm interested to see how it compares, visually.

Yup, I was also thinking of purchasing a mannequin or two (one for jet pilot, another for helicopter).

Major visual difference is that the Type 817-M2 has only one 'transparent' pocket and a clip for the air hose.

Cool. Do you know if the Clansman is manufactured in South Africa or "from the overseas"? :)

Clansman was based in Pietermaritzburg, also manufacturing flight overalls, flack jackets, etc.

I think the Clansman Mk2A was the general anti-g trouser for the SAAF during the 70's and 80's and 90's.

Thanks Dean, yes the SAAF flightsuit I have is also a Clansman.

I've not added to this thread for a while, but the collection has grown substantially.

Arrived this week: USAAF K-2B lightweight flying suite, used by a SAAF 2 Squadron Sabre pilot in Korea. :D

Was gifted an interesting collection last week:

Helmet Mk 1, Type G inner and flight suit, all used by a F/O, later Fl/Lt G Smith of the RAAF. Not exactly sure how it came to be in South Africa, but it features a Springbok on each side of the helmet! "AKR 57" also written on the various items.

Anyone have any further info?

Unusual that the 'bok is red? Only time I've seen that colour 'bok being used is on the funnels of pre-1961 SAN vessels.

I managed to get hold of the original owner of the gear ... a South African who served in the RAF!

Quote:
AKR57 is my personal helmet ident with the Safety Equipment section where the flying kit was serviced and and maintained. AKR stands for RAF Akrotiri, Cyprus, where I served as the Squadron QFI/IRE on No 73 Squadron flying Canberra Mk15's andMk16's with the Middle East Air Force from 1965 to 1967. These versatile Canberras were operated in the ground attack role and were equipped with a wide variety of conventional weapons including the AS30Missile. In addition they were also part of the nuclear strike force. The flying suit is indeed Australian and was a lot more comfortable in the tropical heat than the RAF version, as our theater of operation included all the Mediterranean countries plus Iran and the Persian Gulf and Indian Ocean.

The "bone dome" was painted blue as this was the 73Sqn colour. The springbok was always part of my personal ident during my years of RAF service from 1955 to 1967 -- before they thought of "proudly South African" --!!!

So there you have it, from the horses mouth. :D

Provenance is often the cherry on top for collecting IMO.

Just realised I've not uploaded all my other flight suites, g-suits, flight jackets, etc, etc, etc.

Must make a plan ...
